THE MUROMACHI PERIOD
The Muromachi period, also called the Ashikaga period, took place in Japan between 1338-1573, when Japanese culture experienced a profound change. The Ashikaga military clan took control of the shogunate and moved its headquarters back to Kyoto, to the Muromachi district of the city.

Arts also had a big change. Because of increasing trade with China, Chinese art and objects started having a deep influence on Japanese artists. They modified the use of color to monochromes (Chinese manner) and also changed the themes and objects they used to paint. Some of the most important painters of this periods were: Kao (active early 15th century), Josetsu (active c. 1400), Shubun and Sesshu.

During this period, Japan suffered constant battles, civil wars, rebellions and general discomfort, as well as earthquakes, epidemics, famine, etc, mainly in Kyotos area. Perhaps the most devastating issue for Kyoto were the Onin wars, a series of civil wars that for ten years
-from 1467 up to 1477- rampaged throughout Japan. As a consequence of these wars, Kyoto was almost completely burned down.

The famous Japanese tea ceremony also began to gain importance during this period. Architecture also changed to a more rural style, emphasizing on the use of natural materials.
